Lumbar radiculopathy is nerve irritation caused by injury to the discs between the vertebrae. This condition affects approximately 3-5% of the population. Lumbar radiculopathy most commonly affects males in their 40s and women between the ages of 50 and 60. In persons suffering from this ailment, 10-25% of symptoms last for more than six weeks. Many diseases can cause this illness, however, the most common reasons are structural problems such as a bone spur, herniated disc, traumatic incident, or mechanical stretching. A congenital abnormality, vigorous activity, or a traumatic incident can potentially cause disc damage. When a disc is injured, the materials contained inside it begin to leak, compressing the nerve root. Tingling, numbness, weakness, and pain are all symptoms of this illness. Irritation of the nerves can be induced by mechanical compression of the nerve. Infection or tumor are two other uncommon causes of mechanical nerve compression. Tumors and infections can both diminish spinal canal space and compress the exiting nerve.
